| | Omschrijving: | Andresen was founded in 1845 by the young Jann Hinrich Andresen. Jann was born on the remote Frisian island of Föhr and like many of his fellow Danes at the time, he set sail for Portugal to make his fortune at the tender age of 14. By the age of 19, only five years later, he had discovered where his passions lay, and founded the port house that was to keep his name.
Today Andresen is owned by Carlos Flores de los Santos, a passionate believer in port as one of the world's finest wines. He has amassed multiple awards from competitions around the world. He takes care that all his ports are always foot-trodden in lagares - which might seem like an old-fashioned approach, but the weight pressed down by a human foot apparently extracts the very best quality juice from the grapes, with all the fruitiness and no bitter tannins. His port is always matured in old oak for two years to moderate the heady richness of the Douro Valley grapes.
The 'declaration' of a Vintage Port is an eagerly anticipated event. Grapes do not always meet the required quality. On average, only three years in a decade are declared, and following the stupendously good 2000 and 2003, the cool beginning to 2007 meant this started to look like another low-key vintage. But as so often happens with a great harvest, conditions that started out less than perfect turned out to be just about ideal. The key was a dry, cool ripening season that allowed grape flavours to develop slowly and with maximum finesse. Then a full, sunny ripening phase that finished 2007 off a treat.
In the Spring of 2009 Andresen took pride in declaring this port alongside those of its colleagues at the other top port houses. Much fanfare and flurry surrounded this announcement, and at last, these ports are available to buy.
Expect inky, dense, opulent fruit from this 2007 port. It has raisiny, black intensity with a touch of caramel, figgy sweetness, and will beguile any taster with its layers and layers of flavour waiting to evolve and complex after a few years of bottle age. It's a powerful and ripe-fruited wine to drink now but will reach its best in five or more years' time. Drink on its own after a meal, or with ripe, mature cheeses and nuts, by end 2027. |
